The Berry Antioxidant Showdown: Acai vs Goji vs Bilberry

When it comes to antioxidant-rich berries, acai, goji, and bilberry are often held up as the nutritional heavyweights. Each has a distinct profile of plant compounds, and while they share some similarities, their specific strengths differ. Understanding these nuances can help you make an informed choice about which berry best fits your wellness goals. This article takes a closer look at the science behind each, without the marketing hype.

You may have heard of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scores as a way to compare the antioxidant capacity of foods. However, it is important to note that the ORAC metric has been withdrawn by the United States Department of Agriculture, and it is not recognised by UK or EU regulators as a meaningful measure of human health. The reason is that a high ORAC score in a test tube does not necessarily translate to a benefit in the body. Absorption, metabolism, and the complex interplay of compounds all matter more than a single lab number. So while ORAC is still used informally, we will focus instead on the specific bioactive compounds found in each berry.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a close relative of the blueberry, and its deep blue-purple colour signals a high concentration of anthocyanins. These are water-soluble pigments that belong to the flavonoid family. Bilberries are rich in anthocyanins, the pigments that make them blue. Our Bilberry Multi adds 40 mg vitamin C (50% NRV) per capsule, which contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

Acai berries, native to the Amazon rainforest, have gained popularity for their rich polyphenol content. Unlike bilberry, acai is particularly high in anthocyanins called cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside, along with other flavonoids and phenolic acids. Acai also provides healthy fats, including oleic acid, which is the same monounsaturated fat found in olive oil. This combination of polyphenols and beneficial lipids makes acai a unique option among antioxidant berries.

Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) stand out for their high content of zeaxanthin, a carotenoid that accumulates in the macula of the eye. Goji berries contain zeaxanthin, a yellow carotenoid. The polysaccharides found in goji have been studied in traditional Chinese medicine, though regulatory claims in the UK are limited to authorised nutrient function claims.

If you are looking for a berry to support general antioxidant intake, any of these three will contribute valuable plant compounds. It is also worth considering that bilberry is often available as a concentrated extract, while acai and goji are more commonly consumed as powders or juices. The form matters because absorption can vary. For example, the fat-soluble carotenoids in goji are better absorbed when eaten with a source of fat.

Before adding any concentrated berry supplement to your routine, it is wise to consider individual health circumstances. Bilberry may interact with anticoagulant medications due to its vitamin K content. Goji berries can also affect blood thinning and blood sugar medications. Acai is generally well tolerated, but as with any supplement, quality and purity matter. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a chronic condition, consult a healthcare professional before starting a new supplement. No single berry is a magic bullet, but each offers a unique set of compounds that may support normal bodily functions when part of a balanced diet.
