Magnesium Multi: Ingredients, Dose and the Authorised Claims

Magnesium is one of the most talked-about minerals in nutrition, and for good reason. But not all magnesium supplements are created equal. Vitadefence Magnesium Multi combines four forms of magnesium with vitamin C, sugar beet fibre, and citrus bioflavonoids in a single capsule – a formula designed to support your body’s natural rhythms without the usual trade-offs. Here’s what you need to know.

Magnesium Multi is a comprehensive, plant-based supplement from Vitadefence that delivers 498 mg of elemental magnesium per serving (two capsules). That’s 132% of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV). But this isn’t just a high-dose magnesium product. It also includes 50 mg of vitamin C, 110 mg of sugar beet fibre, plus citrus bioflavonoids and apple cider vinegar – all in a single, easy-to-swallow HPMC capsule.

The idea is straightforward: combine multiple magnesium forms (oxide, hydroxide, sulphate, and citrate) for better absorption and tolerance, with vitamin C, sugar beet fibre, citrus bioflavonoids and apple cider vinegar. The result is a formula that aims to address the common complaint of magnesium supplements causing stomach upset, without sacrificing potency.

Here is the full ingredients panel as it appears on the bottle:

• Magnesium (from Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate, Magnesium Citrate) – 498 mg per serving (132% NRV)
• Sugar Beet Fibre – 110 mg
• Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid) – 50 mg (62% NRV)
• Citrus Bioflavonoids Complex
• Apple Cider Vinegar Powder
• Dietary Fibre – 364 mg (21.5%), of which Capsule Shell 240 mg, Sugar Beet Fibre 110 mg, Fructo-oligosaccharides 14 mg
• Other ingredients: Brown Rice Flour, Citric Acid, HPMC (capsule shell)

The design of Magnesium Multi reflects a deliberate approach to magnesium supplementation. Many single-form magnesium products (like magnesium citrate or oxide alone) can cause digestive discomfort at higher doses. By blending four different magnesium compounds, the formula aims to spread the osmotic load across multiple types, potentially reducing the risk of loose stools or cramping.

Each serving contains 110 mg sugar beet fibre and 14 mg FOS. Vitamin C (50 mg) is a well-known nutrient that works alongside magnesium in energy metabolism and immune function. Citrus bioflavonoids and apple cider vinegar are traditional additions thought to support digestion and mineral absorption, though their effects at these levels are modest and not backed by authorised health claims.

The capsule itself is made from HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), a plant-derived alternative to gelatine, making the product suitable for vegans and vegetarians. The brown rice flour acts as a natural flow agent to keep the blend consistent.

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. According to the UK Nutrition and Health Claims Register, the following health claims are authorised for magnesium:

• Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
• Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function
• Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function
• Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
• Magnesium contributes to normal protein synthesis
• Magnesium contributes to normal electrolyte balance
• Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
• Magnesium has a role in the process of cell division

These claims are supported by decades of research. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function. EFSA's adequate intake is 350 mg a day for men and 300 mg for women.

The 498 mg per serving in Magnesium Multi provides a significant portion of this requirement. However, the warning on the bottle states that 450 mg of magnesium may cause mild stomach upset in sensitive individuals – a sensible note based on clinical experience. The blend of four magnesium forms is intended to mitigate this risk, but individual tolerance varies.

Vitamin C (50 mg) contributes to normal immune function and collagen formation, both authorised claims under the UK Nutrition and Health Claims Register. The sugar beet fibre and FOS are not covered by specific health claims for fibre at these levels, but they do add to the total dietary fibre content of the supplement.

According to the label: “Take 2 capsules (1 serving) on an empty stomach, 1 to 4 times per day. Follow with a glass of grapefruit juice, orange juice or freshly-squeezed lemon juice in water (or just water). Adjust intake to suit your requirements or as advised.”

The recommendation to take it on an empty stomach with citrus juice is interesting. The citric acid from the juice may help improve the solubility of certain magnesium forms, though the effect is likely modest. If you find that taking it on an empty stomach causes any discomfort, you can take it with a small meal. The dose range (1 to 4 servings per day) allows you to start low and increase gradually, especially if you’re new to magnesium supplementation. Start with 2 capsules once a day. Do not exceed the stated dose.

Store in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children. Do not use if the seal is damaged. Best before date printed on the base.

Magnesium Multi is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It is Kosher approved and Halal approved. The product is free from common allergens like gluten, dairy, soya, and nuts, though it is manufactured in a facility that handles these ingredients – always check the label if you have severe allergies.

While magnesium is generally safe, certain groups should exercise caution:

• People with kidney impairment – The kidneys regulate magnesium excretion. Those with reduced kidney function should not take high-dose magnesium supplements without medical advice, as accumulation can occur.
• Individuals taking certain medications – Magnesium can interact with antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, quinolones), bisphosphonates, and diuretics. Space doses by at least 2–4 hours.
• Pregnant or breastfeeding women – The upper tolerable intake level for supplemental magnesium during pregnancy is 350 mg per day (from supplements, not food). Magnesium Multi provides 498 mg per serving, so it should only be used under medical supervision during pregnancy or lactation.
• Anyone with a history of gastrointestinal issues – The warning about stomach upset is real. Start with 1 capsule per day to assess tolerance.

Magnesium works synergistically with several other nutrients. Consider combining it with:

• Glucomannan Multi, Herbal Multi and Psyllium Husk Multi are other products in the range. Read our Glucomannan Multi guide for more details.

1. Why does Magnesium Multi contain four different forms of magnesium?

Each form has a different solubility and absorption profile. Magnesium oxide is high in elemental magnesium but less soluble; magnesium citrate is well-absorbed; magnesium sulphate is another magnesium salt.; magnesium hydroxide is another common form. By blending them, the formula aims to deliver a high total dose while reducing the likelihood of digestive upset from any single form.

2. Can I take Magnesium Multi if I’m vegan?

Yes. The capsule shell is made from HPMC (plant-derived), and all ingredients are vegan-friendly. The product is also Kosher and Halal certified.

3. How does the sugar beet fibre help?

Sugar beet fibre adds 110 mg of fibre per serving.

4. Will this supplement cause diarrhoea?

High-dose magnesium can have a laxative effect, especially magnesium oxide and citrate. The label warns that 450 mg may cause mild stomach upset in sensitive individuals. To minimise this, start with 1 capsule per day and increase gradually. Taking it with food may also help. If you experience persistent loose stools, reduce the dose.

5. Can I take Magnesium Multi with other supplements?

Yes, but be mindful of total magnesium intake from all sources. If you take another magnesium-containing supplement, add up the doses. Also, avoid taking it within 2 hours of certain medications (see “Who should be cautious”).

6. Is the vitamin C in this product enough to meet my daily needs?

50 mg is 62% of the NRV, so it provides a useful contribution but not the full recommended intake. Most adults need 80–100 mg per day from food and supplements combined. You can get additional vitamin C from fruits and vegetables or a separate supplement.
